Indian Language

India with a population of 1.21 billion has 22 official  languages. Half of these languages are spoken by more than 25 million people each.

 The most widely spoken language in north India is Hindi, which is based on the Delhi dialect. It belongs to the Indo-Aryan language family and is closely related to Urdu. The other important languages of the Indo-Aryan family are Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Oriya, Assamese and Bengali spoken in the states of Punjab, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Orissa, Assam and West Bengal respectively.

The Dravidian languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam spoken in the south Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala respectively, have become increasingly important in recent years because of high growth rate in cities such as Chennai, Hyderabad and Banglore.
